How wind power grew in Lithuania
Modern wind power reached Lithuania's Baltic coast in 2003 and 2004. The national encyclopaedia records a 160 kW turbine at Skuodas in 2003. In 2004 the Catholic Diocese of Kaišiadorys built a 600 kW turbine in Kretinga district, paid for by the dioceses of Magdeburg and Kaišiadorys. The country had 623 MW of wind by 2021.
A renewables law in force from May 2011 set a goal of at least 500 MW of grid-connected wind by 2020. It gave renewables priority on the grid, and feed-in tariffs were to end once the targets were met. The 2022 energy crisis and the EU's REPowerEU plan then drove a boom. A record of about 500 MW was connected in 2024. The energy group Ignitis built the largest farm, Kelmė, with 44 Nordex turbines and 314 MW. It has run since June 2025.
The energy agency counted 2,655 MW of wind in March 2026. Wind generated 3,843 GWh in 2025, 32.6% of consumption, and was the largest source for the fourth year running. The goal is 4,500 MW onshore by 2030, and up to 900 MW was expected to connect in 2026. Offshore is slower. Ignitis and Ocean Winds won the first 700 MW tender in 2023, but a second tender failed in October 2025 because only one participant applied.
