How wind power grew in Kenya
IRENA records only 0.4 MW of wind in Kenya in 2000 and 26.1 MW in 2015. The large step was Lake Turkana Wind Power in Marsabit County, whose 365 Vestas turbines of 850 kW give up to 310 MW. At financing in 2014 it was costed at €620m, with €200m from the EIB and €115m from the AfDB. It began supplying Kenya Power in 2018, over a 438 km line built by the state transmission company KETRACO.
Feed-in tariffs attracted Lake Turkana and Kipeto, a 100 MW farm in Kajiado that began commercial operation in July 2021. Kipeto is 88% owned by BTE Renewables, part of Actis, and borrowed from the US DFC. Since 2021 feed-in tariffs have covered only biomass, biogas and small hydro, and new wind must be bought by auction. A moratorium on new power purchase agreements followed a review of Kenya Power's contracts in 2021. Cabinet lifted it in February 2023, but the National Assembly imposed its own freeze, which it lifted in November 2025.
Capacity has stood at 436 MW since 2021. Wind generated 2.30 TWh in 2025, 16.4% of electricity, and Lake Turkana alone delivered 1,367 GWh in 2024. Kenya Power may now negotiate 1,112 MW of new capacity, with wind and solar bought through competitive auctions. In 2024 renewables supplied over 80% of grid electricity, and the goal is 100% by 2030.
