How wind power grew in Iran
According to the chief executive of the Manjil wind farm in Gilan province, Iran installed the Middle East's first wind turbine there in the mid-1990s. Vestas had installed 37 turbines in Iran by 2004, the last that year. In 2013 most of Iran's roughly 120 MW of wind used machines based on a Vestas 660 kW design, with parts made under licence by Sadid Industrial Group.
Iran adopted a feed-in tariff on the German model around 2005. It raised the purchase price from 1,300 to 4,000 rials/kWh in 2013, and to 5,300 rials, about 18 US cents, in 2015. A 2013 industry report said sanctions imposed by many governments had made development harder and slowed foreign investment. In 2022 GlobalData said sanctions made it hard for Iranian banks to process payments or raise debt and equity. In 2026 Manjil's chief executive said the farm would keep using Vestas equipment if sanctions allowed.
IRENA counted 376 MW of wind in 2024, and wind generated 812 GWh in 2023, about 0.2% of electricity. Mapna Group built the 50 MW first phase of Mil Nader in Sistan and Baluchestan, inaugurated in June 2024, and began a 100 MW second phase on 25 December 2025. Manjil had 83 MW in 2024 and aims for 140 MW by the Iranian year 1407 (2028-29). The head of the renewables agency SATBA hoped for 500 to 600 MW of wind by about December 2026.
